The Sustainability of NUP

While the LED lighting efficacy (lm/w) is increasing year by year, a sustainable technology platform along with standard LEDs light sources is more and more necessary for the industry to healthily accelerate the adopting of LEDs for illumination applications.

LEDs for illumination seem to be rapidly growing in some developing countries, particularly in China for government backed national-wide street lighting projects. But traditional lighting giants still hesitate to jump into this huge market since there are some intrinsic issues exist in the LEDs industry for real illumination applications.

According to current technology roadmaps forecasted by LEDs chips and packages makers, the LEDs efficacy (lm/w at initial) will be continuously improving in the coming decade. LED industry seems to have made a tremendous success in increasing lumen efficacy. More and more companies and founds jump into the promising market. But, the fact is, along with the improvement of LED lumen efficacy, LED luminaire is getting far from being popular.

This is because once the lumen output of LEDs packages for the luminaires are changed, the secondary optics and electronics (Drivers) will be also changed for fitting the same original lighting effect accordingly. Applications of safety certificates (UL, CE,…) for any change in the LEDs luminaires should be re-conducted as well. A long time sophisticated useful life and reliability test for the new versions of LEDs luminaires will be also needed. The result is, lighting companies have to periodically change their LEDs fixtures product versions at least every two years for keeping the same lighting effect of original luminaires design requirements.

The Problems Concluded...

  1. “Does the useful life (L70) of high power LEDs lighting luminaires can be really lasting for a long term (>50,000 hrs) as claimed?
  2. "Do lighting companies can offer a sustainable LEDs luminaire to fit the applications from time to time?”
  3. “Can users easily and continuously buy LEDs luminaire with the same lighting characters for a long period?”

If the maintained lumen output and useful life (L70) of a lamp could not be well defined, the lamp is far from real-life application. This is an intrinsic problem for current LEDs package and LEDs lighting technology platform. Moreover, even same LEDs package (lamp) adopted by different luminaire makers will result different lighting effects and different product useful life (L70).

LEDs chips and phosphor are highly temperature-sensitive. High junction temperature causes directly impact to optical and electrical performance of LEDs, as well as the overall quality and reliability of LEDs Luminaires. Different lighting fixture assembly process and different thermal management scheme result different LEDs junction temperature (Tj) and further result different overall lighting performance.

A sustainable technology platform along with standard LEDs light sources is necessary for the industry to healthily accelerate adopting of LEDs for illumination applications. How to keep the product models sustainable becomes a crucial issue for the whole supply chain. Without universal lighting platform and fixed LEDs light sources, time to market products and inventory will be also a big issue to the LEDs Luminaires industry.

NUP and NeoPac Light Engines can completely solve the intrinsic LEDs industry problem – the Products Sustainability, and the NUP is disruptive innovation to the whole LEDs illumination industry.

The Solution by NeoPac

The true meaning of NeoPac Opto’s offering is not only LEDs light sources in super high brightness maintain lumen but also the lamps with fixed and long useful life (L70) at over 60,000 hrs. NeoPac Opto can precisely define the point-light-source NeoPac Light Engine with maintained lumen output as well as LEDs junction temperature (Tj) and useful life (L70) at a fixed form factor by driving the LEDs at a fixed current (530mA). Most importantly, the same maintained-lumen-output lamps with fixed form factor can be steadily offered to LED luminaire makers for a long term base. It is really easy for adopting the NUP and shortening the time-to-market.

NeoPac Opto fixes almost every parameter (maintained lumen output, package, and driver, form factor) to standardize the LEDs lamps. This is important to whole industry while every role in the supply chain is eager to fix their stuffs to cut their costs for the popularization of LED lighting. NeoPac Opto is proposing the most effective way to this goal and all they have to do is to adopt NeoPac Universal Platform for LEDs illumination.

In terms of power, efficacy, lumen output (maintained), driver, optics, thermal management, useful life (L70) and form factor of the lamps, NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP) can offer a sustainable solution to the lighting industry. With NeoPac Universal Platform from package level to module level to system level, some correlation fixed numbers emerged as “Magic Numbers” for opening the door to LEDs illumination!

The Magic Numbers

  • Maintain Lumen (per lamp, white color): 500, 700, 1000, 1400, 2000
  • Maintain Lumen (per lamp, phosphor warm): 350, 500, 700, 1000, 1400
  • Lumen Efficacy (white, lm/w): 71.4, 100, 142.8
  • Wattages: 3.5, 5, 7, 10, 14
  • Chips (per package): 4, 6, 8

In NeoPac Opto, there are currently three NeoPac Emitters (8 chips/6 chips/ 4 chips) with same package foot print and form factor. Combined with different size of NeoPac Thermal Module, a series of NeoPac Light Engines with 500 lm at 7W, 700 lm at 10W, 1000 lm at 14W in white color and 60,000 hrs Useful Life (L70) can be figured out by driving at fixed current 530 mA at lumen efficacy of 71.4lm/w. Most importantly, the useful life test has been conducted at in-house lab for over 20,000 hrs.

When it comes to 2010 and the lumen efficacy increases to 100lm/w, NeoPac can offer NeoPac Light Engines reaches 500, 700, 1000 and 1400 lm brightness output at the same form factor with higher energy-saving efficiency. Even in 2012, lumen efficacy is up to 142.8lm/w, 2000lm/engine are available while still offering 500, 700, 1000, 1400lm standard light engines at the same form factor with even higher energy-saving efficiency. More importantly, these point-light-source LED light engines with similar form factors and maintained lumen output, in the future, can be sustainably and reliably manufactured in large quantity to supply manufacturers of lighting fixture and thus, the LED lighting industry can achieve the goal of standardization. Finally, pre-production time necessary to market products will be drastically decreased by using the NUP for SSL.

From chip maker’s point of view, only three Eigenvalues (lm/w) in their roadmap will be made for fitting NeoPac Emitter and NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP). They are 71.4lm/w in 2009, 100lm/w in 2010, and 142.8lm/w in 2012 for while light LED. This is intrinsically an ‘Quantum” aspect for LED efficacy improvement. It will be also simplifying the R&D and mass production processes. Actually, the three Eigenvalues for LEDs chip makers are quite enough for fitting a variety of application needs.

The NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP) and NeoPac Light Engines have been successfully adopted by NeoBulb Lighting, a subsidiary of NeoPac Lighting Group. A variety of Indoor and Outdoor LEDs luminaires, called “NeoBulb” has been developed and tested at labs and fields for more than 20,000 hrs in past two and half years. NUP-based NeoBulb LEDs luminaires have been sold into many countries around the world for many lighting projects.
